Here in the Northeast, one of the principal heating sources is oil. Flood Fire Pro is usually contacted when a fuel tank has been overfilled, spilling fuel oil onto the floor. There are other means by which fuel oil can come in contact with building materials, such as changing the heating source and having the oil tank removed and not capping the filler tube. Fuel oil can then mistakenly be pumped into the basement when the oil company has filled a tank at the wrong address. This creates an extremely hazardous situation.
Any pilot lights must be extinguished immediately to prevent an explosion.
Oil penetrates porous building materials & vaporizes into the air space resulting in an odor that permeates the entire building. After the oil has been removed by a licensed hazardous waste hauler in accordance with local, state & federal guidelines, a remediation plan is formulated. A thorough inspection is performed to determine the extent of the damage and what building materials have been affected. An initial deodorization using thermal fog may help reduce the odor & prevent it from inhabiting other areas of the building.
Any porous materials that have come in contact with oil for an extended length of time will need to be removed. The same goes for fibrous contents. Once the debris is removed, the cleaning process can begin. Technicians wearing Tyvek ™ disposable suits, gloves, respirators & goggles start by applying a solvent degreaser/deodorizer to the affected area. A power washer and hot water is used to emulsify and cut through the oil. The area is then rinsed and extracted. A second application is usually necessary followed by a deodorizer. Turbo dryers and dehumidifiers are set up to help speed dry the area.
If a lingering odor remains after power washing, a thorough inspection is conducted to be certain that no areas were overlooked or missed. If the inspection reveals no remaining residue then porous building materials are sealed and painted. An air scrubber should be utilized to clean and exchange the air helping to eliminate the odor an oil damage invariably causes. When necessary, a containment area may be set up to keep the oil odor from permeating non-affected areas of the home.
The HVAC system should be checked for contamination & cleaned if necessary. Proper ventilation during the cleaning process is imperative to remove evaporating odors.
