The water damage industry has changed in many ways over the years and Flood Fire Pro continually strives to stay current with the latest techniques and state of the art equipment and tools. We have equipment that can dry behind walls without having to deal with wall removal. This also saves the home owner considerable expense.
Once a water damage has occurred, the drying process should begin as soon as possible to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Ideally this should be between 12 to 24 hours. Once all the water has been removed, antimicrobials are applied to affected surfaces to inhibit mold growth. When the situation warrants, carpet and pad are removed to facilitate drying. Dryers are set up to circulate air and dehumidifiers are set up to remove moisture from the air. An average water damage normally takes between 3-4 days to dry. Each situation is different and varies depending on the amount of water involved and the various surfaces and building materials that have been affected.
What may appear to be a normal water damage may actually have to be treated as a sewer damage depending on where the water came from. There are three categories of water damages: clean water, gray water and black water.
Clean water (or category 1) originates from a source that does not pose substantial harm to humans. Examples of clean water sources may include, but are not limited to, broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows without contaminants, appliance malfunctions involving water supply lines, melting ice or snow, falling rainwater, broken toilet tanks and bowls that do not contain contaminants or additives.
Gray water (or category 2) contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Gray water contains microorganisms and nutrients for microorganisms. Examples of gray water may include, but are not limited to, discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls with some urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, broken aquariums and punctured water beds. Gray water may contain chemicals, bio-contaminants (fungal, bacterial, viral, algae) and other forms of contamination including physical hazards. Gray water in flooded structures that remains untreated for longer than 48 hours may change to category 3 – black water.
Black water (or category 3) contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary. Black water includes sewage and other contaminated water sources entering or affecting the indoor environment. Toilet back flows that originate from beyond the toilet trap are considered black water contamination, regardless of visible content or color. Category 3 water includes all forms of flooding from seawater, ground surface water and rising water from rivers or streams. Such water sources carry silt and organic matter into structures and create black water conditions. (See Sewer Damage page)
When water saturates carpets or floors it provides an instant growth medium, activating years of accumulated debris. It is not unusual, particularly where pets or small children have been present, for the odor from a wet carpet to drive inhabitants from the house. In addition to activating existing residues, water stimulates the growth of molds and fungi, especially in dark, inaccessible locations. Germicides are available which will kill a broad spectrum of bacteria, molds and fungi and have a whole range of application methods. Each situation must be carefully evaluated and considered on its own merits. Carpeting saturated by raw sewage is a candidate for replacement, while “clean” water damage may require only cleaning, drying and a germicidal treatment. Left untreated, a water loss can cause substantial property damage. If mold and mildew are allowed to multiply, a potentially hazardous situation can occur. Those suffering with allergies or lung disease need to have conscientious people helping them through this situation of water damage.
When disaster strikes, you can count on FloodfirePro to restore your property and valuables.
